It was also slightly disturbing to see how the minds of some of our team apparently work when unrestricted!

Every now and then it’s a good idea to ‘sharpen the saw’, to take time out, take stock, and recharge your batteries. As a group this is very important too, so earlier this month we decided to take a step away from the keyboards and enjoy an away day to discuss our plans for the year ahead, get dirty with some hands on creative tasks, and have some fun.

We started the day by discussing Open Water and how far it has come since 2007 as well as where we are hoping to head over the coming year and beyond. Plans are afoot! It was great to see how we’ve been meeting the targets we’ve been setting ourselves and it really gave us a boost for pushing on with our new targets and ambitions.

After the discussion we got stuck into the creativity with a screen printing workshop run by Intra Arts of Rochester. For some of the team this was good chance to get back in touch with something they hadn’t done since college and for others it was a good opportunity to reveal the artistic genius that has been hiding inside them their whole lives! It was a great session and a lot of fun.

Following the screen printing was a life drawing session…something that made one or two of the team very nervous indeed! Pre-emptive excuses about terrible artistic skills were made in advance to our very gracious model Sharon but by the end of the session everyone had quite surprised themselves with some great work. For our designers this was a really fun session that got them back to creating away from the computer and around a subject very different from our usual branding work.

Finally we got into some creative writing, telling stories and exploring ideas. This is something that we always have to do when helping to build brands, finding the important story, and it great to spend time as a group doing this in a fun way and sharing the process. It was also slightly disturbing to see how the minds of some of our team apparently work when unrestricted!

The whole day was a fantastic success. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following:

Sun Pier House for hosting us.
Intra Arts for the excellent screen printing workshop
Sharon Smithers for graciously modeling for us
Matt Child for arranging an awesome life drawing session
Fiona Hansen for planning and executing a very fun creative writing session (as well as the awesome cake!)
